Meet Koko, The Gorilla Who Mastered Sign Language To Communicate With Humans

Her legacy will never be forgotten

On June 21, 2018, the world woke up to the heartbreaking news that Koko the gorilla had died in her sleep at the Gorilla Foundation in Woodside, California, after 46 years of learning, making new friends, and challenging ideas about language.

This doesn’t mean that her legacy has been forgotten. Even today, the Gorilla Foundation remembers Koko as an “ambassador for her endangered species” and an “icon for interspecies communication and empathy.” Hopefully, her profound impact on society and science will be everlasting.
